Course Description

Back to Practice course is a six-week program specifically designed for overseas qualified Dentists / Dental Hygienists Therapists seeking to update their skills and knowledge to enter Uk Dentistry  or for those re-entering the field after a period of absence. This course covers a wide range of essential topics including clinical aptitude, diagnosis and referral pathways, adherence to General Dental Council (GDC) standards and professionalism. With a focus on holistic development, delegates will gain comprehensive insights into the various facets of dental hygiene work in modern dental team settings, enabling them to thrive in their professional careers.

Course Structure:

This course comprises of four distinct phases, each designed to address specific learning objectives and practical application:

Phase 1: Foundation Knowledge and Professionalism

During this self-directed learning phase, delegates will gain a deep understanding of the basic science and evidence-based practices related to complex disease processes and their management within clinical settings. The course also emphasizes on non-clinical aspects, including effective teamwork, appreciating the scope of practice of each team member, and understanding the operational dynamics of dentistry in the UK.

Phase 2: Current Clinical Practice and Professional Development

Phase 2 focuses on up-to-date clinical practice, along with relevant topics such as cross-infection control, radiology, data protection, and working with vulnerable groups. 

Live online lectures will provide ample opportunities for interaction with tutors and fellow delegates, ensuring an engaging and interactive learning experience.

Phase 3: Practical Application and Assessment 

In this week-long residential section, delegates will undergo assessments based on the knowledge and skills acquired thus far. This phase will encompass a combination of workshops, group work, role-playing, task-based learning, and hands-on practical sessions. Delegates will have the opportunity to utilize various ultrasonic scalers, hand instruments (including Gracey's and Universals), and air polishing devices to master the skills required for exceptional dental hygiene practice.

(If you do not want to complete the online learning sessions prior to joining us for the 5 day residential week, you can join us just for this part of the course. Course content for the 5 day residential week is described in detail below. Also course fee will be reduced to anyone who is doing residential week only as opposed to 6 weeks long programme) 

Phase 4: Post-Course Mentorship and Support

Following the completion of the course, delegates will receive six months of ongoing mentorship and support tailored to their specific needs. This support will be provided by a team of clinical and non-clinical experts who will assist delegates in implementing their newfound knowledge in real-world practice. This phase aims to enhance professional development, providing guidance on creating a professional development plan (PDP), refining CVs, building a clinical portfolio, establishing a digital footprint, and effectively navigating job searches and interviews. Delegates will also gain insight into different employment models (employed, self-employed, or limited company) and their financial implications.

  • Regardless of year of qualification; 
  • UK qualified dentists who are aiming to work as dental hygienists/therapists 
  • Overseas qualified dentists who want to work as dental hygienist / therapist 
  • Overseas qualified dental hygienists 
  • Plus anyone who has not been practicing for a long period of time . 

Throughout the course, delegates will acquire familiarity with UK regulations impacting dental hygienists, gain proficiency in clinical guidelines governing their scope of practice, and learn how to provide safe, ethical, and profitable dental care. The course will empower delegates to create a personal development plan, identify strengths and weaknesses, craft compelling CVs, establish a robust clinical portfolio, develop a digital presence, and navigate employment options effectively.

This course will be facilitated by a team of esteemed dental hygienists and therapists, and subject matter experts who bring their expertise and real-world experience to deliver a comprehensive and professional learning experience.

  2. Day 2 - Periodontal Assessment and Treatment Planning, S3 Treatment Protocol
  3. Day 3: Hand Instrumentation Day - Full Hands On Day Part 1
  4. Day 4: Ultrasonic and Air Polish Hands On - Full Hands On Day Part 2
  5. Day 5 - Excelling and Cementing Protocol
