Essentials of Periodontal Management in General Dental Practice (UK)

Course Description

There have been major changes in assessments, classification, diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment protocols since the introduction of new Classification & Diagnosis (2017) as well as 2021 S3 Treatment Guidelines (EFP / BSP 2021) .

Treatment modalities such as root planing and soft tissue curettage are outdated by 30-40 years yet our knowledge, skills and evidence based is often lacking to follow the current BSP/EFP guidelines to serve our patients better as well as to protect us should there be a legal challenge. 

This full day face-to-face course aims to demystify these topics surrounding periodontology and help  you come up with robust periodontal protocol that you can implement in your practice on Monday ! This course is suitable for you if you want to start your journey on evidence based periodontal management in general dental practice (UK), build up perio protocol for your team, looking for a refresher on changes that has taken place in last few years or as a team building session for a practice.

  • Outline the essential components of Periodontal management in the general dental practice in the UK. 

Objectives:
  • Outline current understanding of the aetiology, progression and treatment of periodontal disease
  • Discuss the evidence behind the use of various oral hygiene products and its effectiveness in NSPT, where available
  • Demonstrate how to construct a treatment plan using S3 treatment guidelines , gain consent and keep comprehensive records
  • Explain the objectives of non-surgical periodontal therapy
  • Clarify when and how to offer referral for specialist care.

  • Describe how to motivate and instruct patients in improving their oral hygiene
  • Describe Importance of team approach to give best patient care possible
  • Evaluate the need for periodontal treatment and to be able to offer specialist care when needed
  • Analyse how to formulate a treatment plan tailored to each patient, gain consent and be able to keep detailed, contemporaneous notes
  • Analyse how to explain the disease, process, treatment plan options in simple terms to the patient and be able to gain consent
  • Critique the disease pathogenesis of periodontal disease and its relevance in treatment we provide
