Course Description

The Advanced Hand Instrumentation course is designed for achieving successful outcomes in Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy (NSPT). Through this comprehensive training, delegates will be able to refine their hand instrumentation skills, leading to improved treatment outcomes, patient satisfaction and long-term periodontal health.

The aim of this comprehensive training day is to demonstrate and enhance delegates’ hand instrumentation skills enabling them to carry out successful Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy (NSPT). The day will cover a wide range of topics to ensure a thorough understanding of hand instrumentation techniques and their application within the context of the S3 treatment guidelines. Delegates will learn the importance of patient selection and planning for Active Periodontal Therapy (APT) as outlined in Step 2 of the S3 Guidelines.

Our Aims and Objectives

The session will also address the use of local analgesia, including its necessity, appropriate selection, administration techniques, and the importance of accurate record-keeping. In addition, delegates will gain valuable insights into planning treatment days, incorporating both split mouth and full mouth protocols, while specifically focusing on effective planning of Hand Instrumentation sessions.

Essential skills such as pocket measurement techniques, recalibration of probing force and detection of subgingival calculus will be covered, as well as accessing deep and narrow pockets. A comparison between Ultrasonic Scalers (USS) and Hand Instruments will be discussed, considering their respective benefits and disadvantages, followed by guidance on selection of the most suitable instrument for different sites, including anterior, premolars and molars.

Delegates will also develop proficiency in instrument insertion, adaptation and activation techniques as well as assessing sites for biofilm, irregularities, and deposits following debridement. Emphasis will be placed on the preservation of both soft and hard tissues during the procedure, and strategies for planning hand instrumentation in cases involving deep pockets, narrow pockets and deep-narrow pockets will be explored. Furthermore, the training will provide a comprehensive understanding of furcation extending beyond the traditional Grade 1, 2, and 3 classification, and will also cover techniques for accessing, treating, and evaluating furcation before and after treatment. The use of Ultrasonic Scalers versus Hand Instruments for furcation will be discussed, along with insights into instrument sharpening techniques and the comparison between shortcuts and established methods. Practical training exercises using various props, such as chalk, wax, dental mouth models and optional animal heads (sheep/pig) for advanced training will be provided to enhance delegates’ hands-on skills throughout the day.
